look beyond

As a kid (and to be honest, I still do), I loved Disney movies. I've experienced the magic and pure wonder of Disney's masterpiece films a million and a half times, and still enjoy the thrill of lining up outside the movie cinema doors awaiting what glory awaits me. Now, one of my all-time favourites will ALWAYS be The Lion King. Anyone with me on that?

(Btw if you haven't seen it, 1 - spoiler alert, 2 - go watch it now. Please.)

Not only do I love the humour and antics of Timon & Pumbaa, I admire the wisdom and strength within the words spoken by some of the main characters. One of my favourite scenes in ALL of the Lion King movies is where Rafiki is giving some guidance to Timon - to "LOOK BEYOND WHAT YOU SEE..."

Now in true Timon fashion, he took that literally. But since I was a child, this line spoke to me in ways that still impact how I see my life today:

What do I see?

We can apply this to pretty much every aspect of our lives, but today I've been inspired to zero-in on a really important topic -- SELF IMAGE.

So I want to pose another, more specific, question to you today:

What do I see when I look at myself?

Do you see beauty?

Do you see pain?

Do you see sweetness?

Do you see brokenness?

Do you see goodness?

Do you see heartache?

Do you see God's glory?

Are you just looking at the physicality of yourself? The things you don't like about yourself? The parts that you wish were different? Or are you looking beyond that, where true beauty lies. This beauty can be found in the words of God and what He says about you!

Beyond what you see is what you are.

And what you are is what God says you are!

"It is not fancy hair, gold jewellery, or fine clothes that should make you beautiful. No, your beauty should come from inside you –the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. That beauty will never disappear and it is worth very much to God." - 1 Peter 3:3-4

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." - Joshua 1:9

"She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue." - Proverbs 31:26

"In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace." - Ephesians 1:7

"For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." - Ephesians 2:10

Lets not forget one of the most important parts of the Lion King, where Simba's father, Mufasa, reappears in the clouds to remind Simba who he REALLY is...

"You have forgotten who you are, and so, forgotten me... Remember who you are. You are my son and the one true king."

Let us remember too:

We are ROYALTY in the eyes of God!

"So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if you are a son, then you are also an heir through God." - Galatians 4:7

LOOK BEYOND WHAT YOU SEE - look to what God sees, for it is far truer and more authentic than what we could even conceive in our minds! He adores you, and He sees far more in you than you see of yourself. So trust Him.
